Sarah Bovy clinches first pole in WEC this season
New WEC qualifying format delivered its top 10 cars/drivers who would fight for pole during the hyperpole. Last pole winner Aliaksandr Malykhin in #92 Manthey EMA Porsche 911 GT3 R crashed heavily at Raidillon. The #92 Bronze driver was OK and taken to the medical center for checks. The session was obviously red flagged to give time to the safety team to extract Malykhin from the collapsed Porsche and the marshals to repair the security rail.
The 8 cars session was initially dominated by the two United Autosport McLaren 720S LMGT3 Evo ahead of the Lamborghini Huracan LMGT3 Evo2, a BMW M4 GT3, one Aston Martin Vantage AMR LMGT3, one Ferrari 296 LMGT3, one Aston Martin Vantage and one Corvette Z06. The #92 Porsche 911 obviously couldn’t run the rest of the session and the #78 Lexus stopped after 2 laps.
The Iron Dames in pole
Sarah Bovy clinched pole in 2:20.755. The female squad look strong for the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps as her co-drivers Rahel Frey and Michele Gatting were respectively 3rd and 4th of combined free practices. Let’s see if the wheel of fortune breaks with the unprecedented lack of luck facing the Iron Dames so far in ELMS, IMSA and WEC this season.
SARAH BOVY: “It is the first pole position with the Lamborighini and in FIA WEC this year and at home. I am super emotional, it's incredible. The feeling is that I have no word. Thank you to everybody for the hard work. It feels like a victory but the hardest part of the weekend is tomorrow. I want to do it with Michelle and Rahel. I want to go out there and give it everything. We have to keep this position and I want to win this race, so let's go for it tomorrow.” Source Iron Dames
United Autosport Mc Laren in first row.
Josh Caygill’s #95 United Autosports McLaren will start alongside the Iron Dames Huracan on the front row as he was second fastest in 2:21.092.
#46 WRT BMW and #91 Manthey EMA Porsche in second row
Ak Harthy was third with the #46 WRT BMW M4 GT3 and Shahin fourth with #91 Manthey EMA Porsche 911 GT3 R.
Yasser Shahin (Porsche 911 GT3 R #91): “If we take into account where we started from, then that was an excellent qualifying for our Porsche. I still lack experience here at Spa-Francorchamps and also with the current 911 GT3 R. We’re absolutely thrilled with the progress we’ve made so far. The car feels fantastic and I’m looking forward to a great race.” Source: Porsche
Both United’s Mc Laren in top five.
