The Race

First win this season for Toyota #7’s Mike Conway, Jose Maria Lopez and Kamui Kobayashi in front of Alpine #36 (Matthieu Vaxiviere, Nicolas Lapierre and Andre Negrao) and #22 United Autosports (Filipe Albuquerque, Phil Hanson and Fabio Scherer, also winners of the LMP2 class).

Glickenhaus #709 got the lead 2 hours before the end thanks to an electrical issue on leading Toyota #7. That P1 lasted 1/2 lap as Romain Dumas had to pit in that same lap. After fueling, mechanics got the car in the garage to change brakes.

Glickenhaus #708 had to get in box after 29’, a second time after 58’ and finally gave up after 2:50:59, losing oil from the gearbox.

Difficult times for Brendon Hartley, who had to get in box after one lap for 4’. Five laps later, frightening moment (at 1:42 pm) when a brake issue forced him to escape in the grass at turn one. He managed to get back in box for a 14’ repair. Back in the box again at 2:37:21 for almost 5’ and again at 3:08:24 and again at 3:25:44, this time for a long box repair of more than 48’. All those box times cost the team 43 laps to the leaders.

Qualifications

Toyota GR010 Hybrid #7 dominated all the sessions these two days, to end up with pole thanks to Jose Maria Lopez. Brendon Hartley with Toyota #8 finished 2nd and Nicolas Lapierre with Alpine #36 3rd. Pipo Derani was the fastest of the 2 Glickenhaus, still close to a second slower than the pole Toyota.
