Pole sitter Alpine had close to 90-second lead over the pair of Toyota GR010 when the first red flag was raised caused by a heavy crash of Lopez with #7 Toyota GR010 at turn 14. Before the second red flag caused by a forecasted thunderstorm supposed to be of epic proportions they had one lap lead. At each re-start it was a new race where positions are kept but leads erased.

During qualification sesssion, last year FIA World Endurance Championship champion José María López was seventh quickest in the #7 car he drives alongside Mike Conway and Kamui Kobayashi. Lopez abandoned the 1000 miles after 3:30 racing following two consecutive accidents which ended in the wall and on the roof.
