Second part of Louis Deletraz interview giving details of the WTR Acura race at Rolex 24 At Daytona as well as perspectives with Tower Motorsport.

CRR: At Daytona, the two Acuras were definitely ahead of the pack with the Meyer Shank having the upper hand.

Louis Deletraz: Yes, we didn't quite understand why, but they were better in speed and deceleration.

CRR: At the beginning, we noticed that they were refueling one lap later than you.

Louis Deletraz: Yes, you have to know that the regulations require us to have a minimum amount of energy left when we refuel. This threshold is calculated by combining electricity and fuel consumption. We were more cautious at the beginning, that's why we refueled one lap earlier, but on Sunday we did the same stint as them.

CRR: The end of the race was very respectful between the two teams.

Louis Deletraz: We didn't have any instructions, but clearly we are racing for Acura above all. It was therefore out of the question to make any daring maneuvers that could jeopardize the  victory for Acura. It was important for Acura, WTR and Meyer Shank to achieve the two first positions.

CRR: How is the preparation for Sebring going?

Louis Deletraz: Very well, we tested at Sebring two weeks ago and everything is going well. We are ready.

CRR: It's going to be an intense week for you with the 1,000km of Sebring on Friday and the 12 Hours of Sebring on Saturday.

Louis Deletraz: No, not particularly, because clearly the 12 hours is the priority and my WRT teammates will take a bigger workload for the 1,000 km.

Sprint races in LMP2 class with Tower Motorsport

CRR: In sprint races, the choice of Tower Motorsport will not surprise our readers because you told us last year that it was your objective to complete the GTP program with WTR. It's clear that John Farano was grateful for all that you brought to the team, which allowed them to win the LMP2 championship.

On the other hand, by choosing you for the sprint, doesn't that deprive Tower of one of the best LMP2 drivers for endurance races?

Louis Deletraz: I can't speak for John but we have developed a perfect collaboration in 2022. When I joined them I bought a computer to analyze all the data, I spent a lot of time giving my analysis to John which allowed him to go faster and finally we won the championship together. You have to remember that the human factor is very important in endurance racing, both for John and for me. We were both keen to renew the collaboration while keeping WTR and Acura as a priority.

CRR: That gives you 4 more races in IMSA: Motul Course of Monterey, 6 Hours of The Glen, Road America, Indianapolis IMSA Battle on the Bricks.

Louis Deletraz: For the "6 Hours of The Glen" it's not clear yet whom I will race with. It all depends on the position of WTR in the championship at that time. In any case, whether it's with WTR or with Tower, I'll be at Watkins Glen.

CRR : À Daytona les deux Acura était vraiment au-dessus du lot avec un avantage pour la Meyer Shank.

Louis Deletraz: Effectivement, nous n’avons pas très bien compris pourquoi mais ils étaient meilleurs en vitesse et en décélération.

CRR: Au début nous avons remarqué qu’ils se ravitaillaient un tour plus tard que vous.

Louis Deletraz: Oui, il faut savoir que le règlement nous impose d’avoir encore un minimum d’énergie au moment du ravitaillement. Ce seuil se calcule en combinant la consommation d’électricité et de carburant. Nous avons été plus prudent au début c’est pour cela que nous avons ravitaillé un tour plus tôt mais dimanche nous faisions les mêmes « stint» qu’eux. 

CRR: La fin de course a été très respectueuse entre les deux équipes.

Louis Deletraz: : Nous n’avions pas de consignes mais clairement nous courons pour Acura avant tout. Il était donc exclu de faire des manœuvres audacieuses pouvant compromettre la victoire à Acura. Il était important pour Acura, WTR et Meyer Shank de faire le doublé.

CRR : Comment se déroule la préparation de Sebring ?

Louis Deletraz : Très bien nous avons fait des essais à Sebring il y a deux semaines et tout roule. On est prêt.
CRR : Ça va être une semaine intense pour vous avec les 1000 km de Sebring le vendredi et les 12 heures de Sebring le samedi.
Louis Deletraz : Non, pas particulièrement, parce que clairement les 12 heures sont la priorité et que mes coéquipiers chez WRT prendront une plus grande charge de travail pour les 1.000 km.

Les courses sprint en LMP2 avec Tower Motorsport.

CRR : En sprint le choix de Tower Motorsport n’ étonnera pas nos lecteurs car vous nous aviez annoncé l’année dernière que c’était un peu votre objectif pour compléter le programme GTP avec WTR. C’est clair que John Farano vous était reconnaissant pour tout ce que vous avez apporté à l’équipe, ce qui leur aura permis de remporter le championnat LMP2.

D’un autre côté en vous choisissant pour le sprint cela ne prive pas Tower d’un des meilleurs pilotes LMP2 pour les courses d’endurance?

Louis Deletraz: Je ne peux pas parler au nom de John mais nous avons développé une parfaite collaboration en 2022. Il faut savoir que lorsque je les ai rejoint, j’ai acheté un ordinateur pour analyser toutes les data, j’ai passé beaucoup de temps à transmettre mes analyses à John ce qui lui a permis d’aller plus vite et enfin de compte nous avons gagné le championnat ensemble. Il ne faut pas oublier que le facteur humain est très important en endurance, autant pour John que pour moi. Nous avions tous les deux à cœur de renouveler la collaboration tout en gardant la priorité à WTR et Acura.

CRR: Cela vous assure 4 courses supplémentaires en IMSA : Motul Course de Monterey, 6 Hours of The Glen, Road America, Indianapolis IMSA Battle on the Bricks.

Louis Deletraz: Pour les « 6 Hours of The Glen » ce n’est pas encore clair avec qui je les disputerai. Tout dépend de la position au championnat de WTR à ce moment-là. En tout cas, que ce soit avec WTR ou avec Tower, je serai à Watkins Glen.
