WEC Season 10: 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps 2022 LM GTE Race
LMGTE PRO
The race started under dry and sunny conditions with two incidents at La Source:
- Kevin Estre (Porsche #92) tried to pass pole-sitting Gianmaria Bruni taking the outside of turn 1. Both made contact and Porsche #91 lost the rim, which led to a puncture. The pair Gianmaria Bruni – Richard Lietz were out of contention from then on.
- Christina Nielsen with Ferrari 488 GTE EVO #85 spun at La Source, triggering the first FCY.
Kevin Estre was leading the LM GTE class until the race was stopped before the end of the second hour.
The #52 AF Corse Ferrari gained a one-lap lead because the Ferrari parked up on the grid for the red flag with the overall leading Toyota between it and Porsche 92, giving it a free wave-by.
Alessandro Pier Guidi (Ferrari #51) took the lead over Porsche #92 during the rainy period so that both Ferrari were leading the race at the end of the fifth hour.
After six safety cars and five Full Course Yellows and three red-flag stoppages, the sky cleared up again allowing the track to dry up on the rolling part. Christensen (Porsche #92) managed to pass Antonio Fuoco (Ferrari #52) after a tight duel and started hunting for the leader James Calado with Ferrari 88 GTE EVO #51.
Despite Christensen's enormous pressure, James Calado (AF Corse Ferrari #51) resisted and crossed the checkered flag 0,523” ahead of Porsche #92, especially since Christensen could not find grippy options beyond the racing line.
Kevin Estre and Michael Christensen grabbed the 18 points for P2 and keep the leadership of the Championship with 14 points advantage.
Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado (Ferrari #51) scored the 25 points attributed to P1. They are now second in the championship.
The #64 Corvette C8.R ended fourth, one lap behind. Bad luck for Corvette Racing, Nick Tandy and Tony Milner who had to stop for a five-second emergency service for fuel under a red flag, meaning a loss of more than a lap as they needed to wait for the whole field to come around when running resumed. Nick Tandy resumed three laps away from the Pro-class lead under the safety car that followed the red flag. They are now third in the Championship.
Being last in the class for the second race of the championship, Richard Lietz and Gimmi Bruni drop one place ending up fourth in the championship.
Despite a P3 at Francorchamps, the tandem Miguel Molina – Antonio Fuoco (AF Corse #52) is still last in the standing of the Championship.
